The Brazilian government recently released a report that reveals deforestation within the country is again on the rise, increasing by 29 percent over the past year. As the removal of forest continues, the country may find itself unable to live up to the climate change standards it recently agreed to in Paris.
According to the Deforestation Monitoring Program for the Legal Amazon, a total of 7,989 square kilometers for forestland was destroyed between August 2015 and July 2016. This marks the second year in a row that deforestation in Brazil has seen an increase. The country had previously gone 12 years in a row without seeing a two-year increase in deforestation.
The data is especially distressing as deforestation makes up nearly 40 percent of the country’s total greenhouse gas pollution. Consequently, Greenpeace is urging the Brazilian government to cease all deforestation at once and craft policy to help protect the Amazon forest.
